Defacing Tikipedia theme
Hi,
At some point, I may get tired of options and just decide to have one single theme, like the elegant simplicity of Tikipedia or some of the simpler ones among the legacy themes. At the moment though, I am still in the mode of allowing visitors to choose themes — although I removed most of the themes and reduced it to a few choices.
This will[require some consistency among the themes and will mean having to have some common basic format among the various themes.
One thing I noticed, the Tikipedia theme was that it did not show the modifications that I did on the "tiki.topbar.tpl" where I have placed many key navigation features for the Admin and the visitors, such as visitor's guide. register, login, admin links, etc. The date was also in the tiki.topbar.tpl as usual, rather than the top left isde in Tikipedia theme. I like it that way, although this wil be inconsistent with the login section at the top of the tikipedia theme.
How can I do this in the Tikipedia theme?
My website actually is a a collection of sites using different programs. instead of opting for the integrated Tikiwiki CMS — although still basically a tiki in its framework. As a result, it is more of a portal, with a set of three logos at the top section, rather than the single Tikilogo on the top left side. There was no problem with adding the complex top section (that is common for all the various themes I have chosen).
My website is in transition as I try to create it into the Tikiwiki dynamic format from the old static pages. In the interim, what I tried to do was replace the "Tikipedia" sunflower icon with the old logo of my website by renaming the latter as "logo". If it worked when a visitor clicks on the old logo, it should be able to access the origial content of the website.
Even with the change of the "logo" image though — verified by looking at what appeared in the URL — the Tikipedia theme still showed the sunflower Tikipedia icon.
How can I let it show the old logo instead of the sunflower Tikipedia icon?
I revamped the layout of all pages also so that the icons for edit, printing, etc. as well as the usual "heading section" are all at the bottom after a wiki text of the article, by revising the appropriate php or tpl files. In fact, I have opted for the page title not to appear, so that I can place a more appropriate title for each page rather than the cryptic and coded titles used for naming each file. The format is how all the other themes I have chosen, more or less appear in their layout.
Again, Tikipedia theme differs markedly, as Gary outlined for his modifications:
"To replicate this in the Tikipedia theme, some of Tiki's wiki page controls have been moved to tabs above the content area and some to a Mediawiki-style toolbox, styled like a module, in the left-side column. This "module" (not a real Tiki module, but a template styled to look like one) is called only on wiki pages. This is where the links for 3-D browser, print, save, monitor, backlinks, language, and so on are located. Also, the page author information is moved from the wiki page area itself to a modified bottom bar that is loaded only on wiki pages."
Also, all the usual wiki stuff (edit, history, perms, etc.) are located at the bottom, while they remain on top with the Tikipedia theme. I prefer them at the bottom. What can I do to initiate this modification in Tikipedia theme.
With the above proposed modifications for Tikipedia, Gary must the seething mad with all the hard work that he has done. *smiles*
What is left? I think almost everything. I saw the CSS of the Tikipedia theme. And Gary did indeed include some commentaries that would serve as guidelines for people who may want to use it as a starting point to create new themes. This I think is very important.
I also like the plugin modules that are already part of the Tikipedia that will expand the potential features that could be added to wikipedia pages that may not be possible with the conventional dynamic content, banner system, etc.
The way it is configured now, the Tikipedia theme therefore may become useful as starting point for creating more innovative modules — perphaps even one that use mainly "divs" rather than the tabular tags used mostly by tikiwiki scropts now.
So, I hope you won't be too mad Gary, if I have defiled your great work with the Tikipedia theme. *smiles*
